How to Use JB-Weld Original

J-B Weld Original can be used to repair many different materials including metal, wood, plastic, ceramic, fibre glass, brick, concrete and much more. The key to ensuring you have the strongest bond possible is the preparation of the materials to be repaired and the correct application of the J-B Weld Original itself.

1. Ensure the edges of the materials that are being bonded together are thoroughly cleaned, scrape rust from metal and trim away any excess material from either edge to allow a clean bond. If edges have been in contact with oil or grease then a solvent cleaner must be used to remove any traces of contaminants prior to starting the bonding process.

2. Once you have cleaned up the edges that are to be bonded, then proceed to mix up equal amounts of resin and hardener (1:1) ensuring you have enough to complete the desired task. Mix the resin and hardener on an old plate or similar item that you do not use anymore using a lolly pop stick or old teaspoon.

3. J-B Weld original works on a chemical reaction and this chemical reaction starts working as soon as the resin and the hardener are mixed together. You can tell when the reaction has started to take place as the mixture will start to generate a small amount of heat and will start to set within a few minutes, so once the resin and hardener have been mixed together you must work quickly.

4. Apply the J-B Weld Original mixture to the broken area and clamp or hold the pieces together until the glue has set (J-B Weld Original sets in 20-25mins). Once the set time has passed then leave the item for the entire cure time (J-B Weld Original cures in 15-24hrs depending on the surrounding temperature).

Do's and Don'ts of Using JB- Weld
  • Do wear eye and hand protection when using J-B Weld Original

  • Dont get J-B Weld Original on your skin, as it will bond skin together if left to set, if you do happen to get J-B Weld Original on your skin then rinse away with soap and water asap

  • Do ensure the J-B Weld has cured before using any item you have repaired

  • Dont forget to use J-B Weld in a well ventilated area or wear a respirator to avoid harmful effects from fumes

It's also worth noting: You can mix more or less hardener with the resin depending on your needs, using less hardener will prolong the set and cure time so it is useful for working in hot weather or when using a large amount of epoxy, which can set slightly faster due to generating more heat and in turn speed up the cure process. Using more hardener is useful for cold weather as the J-B Weld struggles to cure properly in cold temperatures and the extra hardener will allow the cure process to take place.
